Sorry to hear this. For me the problem was the cost of the round-trip airline ticket (expensive!). Also the weather that time of year is really bad where I'm from and most likely down there too. Roads can get really snowy and/or icy in Jan. Maybe if there is a next time for something like this - offer it during the "off season" when the weather is better but before summer kicks in. And possibly do it during the week (Tues. - Fri. or Wed. - Sat.) when the airline rates are less expensive. Just a few suggestions.
I’m sorry to hear this. Maybe it was just too ambitious in its location? True, it would be far enough away from the “traditional world” so as not to cause any problems, but also just too far away from the airport to be efficient? Just guessing.
Also want to note, this is open to all wrestling interests aside from the lightweight concentration. I mean, serious wrestlers, who want to give it their all against other serious opponients are encouraged to attend. Despite the seeming informality and lighthearted treatment, I'd like to begin a tradition for awarding a Lightweight Title belt/medallion, that gets passed along to each new champion. Not yet sure I can preface that with the site name, Meet Fighters. If not, I'll create an 'open brand use' moniker. Thinking Match Factor.
😌 I'm excited for this event. It sounds super fun. I'm in. I can assist in hosting as well.
I'm currently 145.2, but also cutting.
If I end up not having a match at the event (unlikely hahaha), that's ok. I am excited to meet people with similar interests as mine and chatting. I also wouldn't mind having a small match with everyone involved, a large match, with everyone involved, or individual matches with everyone there. 😄😆I may be fantasizing now...
More into Gutpunching than anything; which is also why I completely understand I may have 0 matches or plenty of matches. I don't mind....
When it comes to cost, I don't drink. I also Fast every other day, so I won't be eating too often. I also won't mind helping pay for certain things just to assist in the event happening and going smooth. ❤️🤗
Nice, Setsu. Likely be some heels there happy to gut target, especially in a tag-team match. :-)
With at least two mat areas, and perhaps a third, and access to any, everyone's match wishes should be granted.
Appreciate the 'hosting' comment. Need another Southern belle to welcome these rough-house Northerners down to our parts.
But, guys don't think Setsu is easy pickin's, if he doesn't take a fancy to you, he'll mash you up like creme potatoes without the creme. :)
Some Google drive time data:
CLT (Charlotte) to house, 109 miles, 2 hr 9 min;
AVL (Asheville) to house, 86.4 miles, 1 hr 45 min;
TRI (Johnson City, TN) to house, 58.7 miles, 1 hr 22 min.
Rental Car data, Enterprise/Alamo typical total (sans insurance), 4-wheel drive (AWD), SUV or Jeep, 3pm Fri- 3pm Mon:
CLT - $227;
AVL - $460;
TRI - $322.
You might get by withOUT AWD, thus dropping those prices, especially in Asheville. The house is only 1 mile from a highway, and doesn't appear to have any steep grades (relatively). Please coordinate with other arrivals to share vehicles, or if not flying in, perhaps joining up with someone near you. Would like to keep it to 5 automobiles.
Alright, deed is done. Will need to get commitment$ coming in very $oon, to make this go. Cancellation deadline is mid Dec. I don't plan on cashing any checks until after the deadline. If this doesn't get legs by then, I'll mail you back your check (message me for my address). I've paid half, which is refundable if I cancel in time. The second half will be due Jan. 1.
A couple of changes. Full disclosure, cost was considerably more than first appeared, nevertheless host will limit the damage. If achieving an 80% occupancy, the per person cost is like $330, at full occupancy, $268. Going to set it at $250, and then $125 for guys 24 or under. For the older guys, if you can chip in more, would be helpful. I just want to inaugurate this type of niche MF meetup, have it go well. A success will help sell the next event.
The other minor change: the best house/chalet selection, due to several factors, is nearer the Sugar Mtn Ski resort, but it's quite close to Beech, they both are close to Banner Elk, so skiers can do one on Sat. and the other on Sun. The bonus is that it's a little closer to the area airports, than the Beech Mtn options. As a result, I've modified the 'logo' to say Sugar Mountain, though I might should have just used Banner Elk..
Dates are still the same, January 16-19 (MLK weekend), part of making it expensive, but then the extra day is worth it. This property has an early check-out time of 10am. I think the place is so large they need the extra cleaning time.
It sleeps 16, 6 of those spots are in single beds, the rest either king or queen situations; this was better than virtually all of the other choices which often had double beds in the mix.
Should we fill up, there are lodges where rooms could be booked by late comers.
Virtually all of these rentals come with a 'NO EVENT' policy. Obviously, the goal is to have zero disturbances of neighbors, avoid risky behavior, and keep the property and all furnishings in good order. I trust that we all can follow that course. Let's act like a family and fight, LOL.
I presume you knew that the couple of photos I'd posted before were just an example of what was possible. As it turned out that property, while still available, had such meager parking available (at best 3 spots) I saw it as a big inconvenience. Neverthless, while parking is more generous at the selected property, it is best that autos are kept to a minimum, so make every effort to arrive in 4 somes.
Again, about the meals: I've done this type thing before, and it worked out great. Five 'house' group meals, Friday night, Saturday morning, Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Monday morning. Lunches will be each man for himself, whether out, or in, and Saturday night will be designated as a dining out actiivity. Don't yet know our numbers, but everyone will sign up for one meal prep and one cleanup, the number for each TBD. The preppers will plan the meal and make the needed purchases. Because dinners are invariably more expensive than breakfasts, we'll collect $25 from each person, upon arrival, then divvy it up to the preppers; the Friday night preppers to be reimbursed. I presume cleaning supplies will be on hand, already.
If desired, we could ditch the Monday breakfast, since the 'check out' time is so early. Or at least have it include some grab and run fare.
When I get a sufficient number of commitments to give this new foal its legs, I'll put it on the MF event list. Didn't want to start there and then have MF egg on my face, speaking of breakfast.
Trying this again. Did some sleuthing. System would add photo to me messages. Tried uploading it to my gallery . . . there I got message 'too small' . . . a message that this section does not provide.

Even in January in the North Carolina mountains, there might be too much natural snow, but if the temperature is right, they will be making snow. New to this format, what type of matches will this be? pro style, freestyle or submission?
Match types are up to you and your competitor(s).
Predictions for the NC mountains this winter are for above average snowfall and colder temps, so either way should be good coverage.
Okay. BIG update. BEECH MOUNTAIN, NC is the choice of the 'selection committee' for MF's Lightweight Meet '26.
After lots of analysis, figurative pacing about, studies by great minds (mine), a location choice has been made.
Ease of accessibility was the largest factor. This had three components, drive time (between airport and chalet), flight frequencies and fares.
Each area had a small airport and a major airport to factor in. Purely distance wise from a commercial airport, Stowe et al in Vermont and Crystal Mountain et al in Michigan were tops. However, the flight offerings into these airports were meager, and fares are high. A choice of arriving early afternoon or late evening was typical. This was true of the closest airport (TRI) to Beech Mtn in NC. When considering the nearest hub or major city airports, Beech Mtn is on top, at about a 2.4 hour drive from CLT. BOS, though not a major hub it has lots of flights, was next, adding 20 minutes, if going to the Killington Ski Area, while DTW is almost 4 hours from ski areas in northern Michigan.
True as well, the airfares into a hub from another hub are meager compared to non-hub to hub fares. This seemed a good option for those wanting to keep travel costs down.
While the short drive from the Burlington airport to Stowe, is quite appealing, the above mentioned issues, plus the higher costs of lodging gives the edge to Beech Mtn.
The final kicker, that affirmed, supported the choice of Beech Mtn, in North Carolina, is that heretofore there have not been any MF meetups outside of the larger cities in the north, including Toronto. Indeed, there is another one scheduled for NYC only a month after this Lightweight Meet. Ergo, there have been plenty of opportunities, geography wise for NE and Midwesterners.
BEECH MOUNTAIN, NC is the choice of the 'selection committee' for MF's Lightweight Meet '26.
UNDER 25 y.o. Discount
Not yet set in stone, but it has been suggested that pricing for the lodging be aged based, since younger guys who would like to attend have financial situations that prevent such, e.g. In college, grad school, new job, etc. Considering the travel cost for some coming a considerable distance, I'm thinkng of 'comping' the lodging part for the two under 25 years old who came the farthest, based upon straight line figuring, and halving the lodging fee for others under 25. That doesn't make the event free of course. There is still the $25 food contribution for meals, $10 if you're a drinker, of course your travel expense, including the ground transportation, any restaurant expenses, and ski fees (of course optional). And any bets you might want to put down on the matches . . . LOL :-)
After reading through all this, I would be very interested, but as far as this winter, I cannot do any international travel. I hope that in the future you would consider the Canadian Rockies, from Calgary, it's pretty easy to get to Banff, Lake Louise or Golden. Jasper (where I live) is a little far from any international airport.
I have to say I really like the idea of this. I'm 130 pounds, and would love to attend an event like this, where I could test my abilities against other lightweight wrestlers.
In the future I would definitely be up to travel anywhere in Canada or the US, just as far as this winter is concerned, it's just not in the budget.
I hope everyone has a lot of fun, and I wish I could join you.
Also, note that this is just the first Lightweight Meet. If it goes well, annual (or even semi annual) events can be held, with the site location rotating among the regions.
I'm going to refer to this as a 'Meet' from now on. Never liked the term 'fest' and this is in NO WAY a commercial or multi-location event.
Just to let you know, it is getting more traction than what you might see in this topic thread, but coming in as private messages to me.
I also gets lots of complaints by way of suggestions, mostly about location, but one about dates. I'll just address the location.
If you want a lightweight event in YOUR city, then do one. The MF 'interest' group is already sparsely populated (compared to other kink/fetish/nerd interests), and the lightweights are just a small fraction of that.
To get a sufficiently sized group together, taking into account date conflicts, life conflicts, etc. is going to mean considerable travel involved for most.
Now, also, putting it in a large, easy to get to city, like NYC, Chicago, etc., is going to mean expensive hotel costs, even for modest accommodations (which can have issues). As well, other than finding a very large 'mansion' turned AirBNB, in the city, you're looking at separated lodging arrangements. Since, these 'fests' do not arrange for a gym or other locale for hosting all of the matches, where everyone can gather, you're left out of stuff that you don't personally arrange. And, having more than 3 guys in a hotel room during a wrestling match is going to create a commotion likely to draw noise complaints.
Since, many are going to have to travel, why not put that burden on everyone, do it at a ski area chalet, many of which are built to sleep many, and often have large interior spaces for social gathering. Now, it could, as one suggested, be done in warm weather, and cost less likely. Personally, I think the winter is more condusive to both socializing and wrestling, and I think snow in the mountains creates a nice atmosphere. The ski area provides both an invigorating and aesthetic daytime alternative, in contrast to roaming about a big city.
Now. That said. I'm struggling with location. Someone has thrown out another option, northern Michigan.
The two biggest factors, aside from finding a large enough chalet still available for a very 'in demand' holiday weekend, are costs and drive time to a decently sized commercial airport. Minor factors are apres ski dining (for Saturday night) and general ski lodge atmosphere. So, I can't yet lock in the location.
The lodging at the Vermont ski areas are quite expensive, more than the $200/person I threw out. But, they are also considerably closer, than are the best ski areas in NC, by drive time to decent commercial air service. I'll check into the Michigan situation.
Totally agree with what you said. I think that the ski area chalet is an awesome idea! Many guys staying in one chalet keeps the cost down and are quite large. Great for a number of guys to meet other guys. Big city hotels are probably very expensive. I think that you came up with a great idea!
For the younger guys who might be pondering the quandry of getting from an airport to a ski area, don't despair. It does't have to be an individual endeavor. Sametime arrivals (or nearly the same) could rideshare. The first to arrive could get the leased car, and wait on some others, shairing both the rental cost and ride to ski area. It not only reduces individual costs, but boredom, and later the number of vehicles at the chalet.
You'd likely have over an hour entailed in arriving at a big city airport and getting to your booked hotel, likely among strangers on public transit. While the drive to the ski area 'might' seem long, the overall experience isn't much longer and probably less 'intense'.
For those wary of a skiing experience, you'll be in good company. Relax, enjoy. That's also only a side benefit and optional. Ski lifts generally shut down about 4pm. Pre-evening to after midnight is group dinner and wrestling/socializing.
I'm thinking there will be enough room to have two (if not even three) mat areas. in case you were thinking mat time might be sparse. I think that is an awesome benefit of this arrangement, as it provides everyone with easy access to watching several matches, even at once, and for those who enjoy having an audience. An entrepreneurial sort could earn back his trip costs as a bookie, lol, while providing additonal entertainment for everyone.
I can't stop making addendums . . . need another project.
Weight incentives . . . I'm thinking of offering a lodging refund to the lightest weight attendee, some encouragment for the flyweights to join in (who are often younger and less financially able). And free house 'drinks' (no $10 liquor fee) for both fly and bantam (up to 135 lbs) weights; heck how much can they hold anyway, lol. Will have a scale there for weigh in.
On the other end, dum dum dummm . . . any one tipping over 155, even a nudge, is amerced $25 per pound and/or nudge over. So, watch the Ding Dong consumption. :-) Traditional undies worn for weigh-ins.
Hoping we get a chalet with a weight room . . . probably not, so anyone driving could bring along some dumbells :-)
And for the serious dudes, or even semi serious, I'm toying with the idea of creating a MeetFighter Lightweight Champion Title medallion or 'belt', might add North American to the description. I've sometimes joked about challenging a guy for 'his' title belt.
The number to accommodate could be higher, so 16 is not an upper limit. There are chalets that will sleep even 20, and there is an option to book two near each other, should the interest grow. So, don't think it is limited to a small group.
It's not set in stone. If I get verbal commitments from at least 8 dudes (followed up by checks), I'd book a place. Then post it as an event for others to find. Right now, I'm just marketing it free style.
Strangely enough, it doesn't appear one can edit or delete the initial text of a 'topic'. Thus, I'll append my changes here.
Decided (almost immediately) to use 155 lbs, as the 'official' upper limit, since that's MMA number, and makes it less 'controversial'.
This looks pretty awesome!! While I can't commit currently as I'm amidst resolving some health concerns which involved a surgery wish I could as would love to attend and support something like this :D
Giving this a try.
I'm game for booking a chalet near a ski resort (in the U.S) for MF guys weighing at or under 150 lbs. That's the middle of the MMA Lightweight range, but remember this event will include all the levels below it. Won't quibble if you're tipping as high as 155, but make an effort to come in under the 'official' limit, else we might have to throw you back into the snow. :-)
Not much activity in the group, it seems, so I'm not holding my breath. Message me if you meet the weigh in and game for this.
Thinking an MLK Day weekend, meaning mid January. Obvioulsy, you get not only wrestling opps but some slope fun also.
The lodging costs would be $200/person. That's for up to 3 nights, Fri-Mon, in a large chalet, sleeping between 12-16. Seems a lot better deal than a hotel in Manhattan.
Mostly group made meals, morning and night, but likely dinner out Saturday night. Pitch in $25 fee for the 5 inhouse meals; perhaps $5-10 for those wanting liquor Fri and Sun nights. Everyone signs up for at least one cook duty and one cleanup duty. Everyone is on their own for lunches, there being eateries at the ski lodge.
Location is not set. Ski areas in the East are preferred, simply due to convenience to most U.S. and Canada members, as well as those in Europe, with interests. Thus, North Carolina in the South, Vermont in the North, possibly West Virginia. Convenience to airport is a factor. Let me know your thoughts.
This doesn't leave a lot of time. MLK weekend will fill up fast; especially all of the best lodging. Will need to get a pretty solid response, at least 8 guys, before I'd book a place. So . . . don't delay. :-)
Frankly, this seems like a good opportunity. Is better than holding all matches in hotel rooms. Gives people more time to consider with whom they want to give a go. Gives more opportunity for seeing others wrestle. NOW, note that it doesn't eliminate your option to go at it in private (if preferred), as there are bedrooms which can be used in that event.
It also gives more time to make social connections with guys you might not want to wrestle but otherwise enjoy their company. And skiing together, at all levels, also can create good times. Skiing, of course is optional, with other daytime activities at hand. Those who've skied know the fees associated with it.

10/07/2025 12:21 AMI'm going to refer to this as a 'Meet' from now on.

10/05/2025 7:31 AMThe number to accommodate could be higher, so 16 is not an upper limit.

10/05/2025 4:58 AMStrangely enough, it doesn't appear one can edit or delete the initial text of a 'topic'. Thus, I'll append my changes here.
Decided (almost immediately) to use 155 lbs, as the 'official' upper limit, since that's MMA number, and makes it less 'controversial'.

10/05/2025 3:33 AMGiving this a try.
