Scott Calabos is in the 145 lb. finals of the conference wrestling meet. His opponent is Mateo Juniper.
Calabos' dad knows this match is everything for his kid, and is not above taking steps to insure his win. Already in a line of work of shady dealings, he has at his disposal a number of payroll muscle. The conference meet is in Reno, NV. The wrestlers are lodged at area hotels. It is not difficult to know who is where. Mr. Calabos sends a team to 'prep' his son's opponent for their match.
Waiting for Mateo to return to his hotel room, after a practice session, the 'team' makes an impression on the young Mateo. In fact, quite a few impressions. Instructed to not leave any easily visible marks, Mateo is worked over hard in his gut; not enough to send him to the hospital, but enough to enduce pain at the slightest touch of his body's core.
Mateo would not take the easy route, claiming injury, besides, who would believe his story. Painful to even pull the straps up of his singlet, he strode onto the mat, for the final match.
