I suspect it was very dependant on the character. A blue eyed baby face like valentine would wear metallic skimpy trunks. Others would wear singlets etc.
I’ve often wondered about the process that the wrestlers we saw on screen went through to.
I’ve heard they often travelled to venues together. Would they then all change in the same room together (there’s a fantasy right there!)? Did all of them wear underwear underneath their trunks? I’ve seen glimpses of jock straps (King Ben against Keith Hayward) and in the Chic Cullen against Keith Hayward you can see white underwear. Did they fully control what they wore or were they told by Max Crabtree and alike? I always laughed when Kent Walton advised how we could tell the wrestlers apart and how this was useful for those watching in black and white!
I'd wondered whether the wrestlers chose their own gear or if it was chosen for them. Greg Valentine always wore bright trunks either metallic or matt and it didn't look like he wore anything underneath = especially in his bout v Mr X or Sid Cooper. Danny Boy Collins the same although he wore black in some bouts.
I imagine ‘Greg’ was very much encouraged, if not told, to wear as skimpy trunks as possible to appeal to the ladies (and a few men!). The metallic ones definitely helped to highlight the assets too.
